Admin

Modern communication technology sets drawbacks

Modern communication technology is becoming more and more indispensable to us. We use it to communicate, to relate ourselves with one another, and even use it to help us when we are in emergency. Modern communication technology really brings us convenience. Yet, while we are celebrating the benefits brought by modern communication technology, we shall never ignore the drawbacks that it sets on us.

Communication Skill Lack

Indeed, communication technology makes us more related to others. By pressing a button, we can talk with or send messages to our friends, wherever they are. But human beings are complexed social creatures. We are communicating not only through our voice or solely by sending words, but also through our facial expressions, gestures and postures. Even a slight movement of our eyes can deliver a profound message. But people now are becoming more dependent on our mobile phones or the internet. We communicate mainly through voice and words, without exposing our facial expressions, gestures and postures to others. Hence, people are gradually accustomed to such a pattern of communication and lose the ability to express ourselves by using body language or even understand others’ body language.

In this case, people are less capable to communicate and convey their messages to others. They are not used to communicating with skills.

Language Skill Lack

You may notice one thing: we communicate a lot, but when it comes to communication with people face to face, our language still cannot hit the target of what we are intended to say. Our words wonder around, still, meanings cannot be fully expressed. You may also notice that when we are talking, we are not talking as fluently as before. The reason is simple: we are not practicing it often! How many times do we edit our messages to a perfect one before we send them out? How many times do we delete all the words in send box and reshape our wording? We have time and chances to give thorough considerations on our words before we send them, but the problem is: when we are communicating face to face or even giving a speech, can we revise our words again and again? The answer is negative. Time is limited. When we are having conversations with others, we do not have so much time to shape our wording. We have to say it out right away, or the conversation will come to an end. Because the words are not well organized, we are unable to say them in a correct and fluent way. That’s where slip of tongue or stumbling over words arises. And that is why many Gen Ys (young people born in 1980s) cannot express themselves fully as well as fluently when they are communicating face to face with others.

Aloofness on Real Communication

Imagine a picture: you are busy chatting with your friends on the internet or on your mobile phone in your room, while your parents are sitting in the living room, staring at the TV, but eager to communicate more with you.

The picture is common in many families today. Young generations are chatting happily in the room, but they tend to forget a real and face to face communication with people beside them. We pay attention to longhaul communication instead of sparing some time to pay attention to people around us. In this case, what is the purpose of communication? People are becoming more and more aloof to real communication.

I once watched an advertisement of public service on TV. The creator made hundreds of 9cm-tall clay sculptures of different people from different families. The prototypes of these clay sculptures are those who are addicted to the internet and neglect communicating with their families. Each one of these clay sculptures is put into one glass bottle of different sizes. And the bottles, with sculptures inside, are placed on a large black board to form an image of a keyboard, meaning “the interruption of communication by keyboard”. The creator of this advertisement hopes to arouse people to care more about their own families, to communicate more with their friends and families around them and to say “NO” to aloofness on real communication.

Therefore, does communication technology really bring us closer? Or does it make us more aloof to communicate with others? These are questions that we need to think about.

Disturbance on Life

I once experienced this.

I was leisurely on vacation at home, having a meal and chatting with my families, planning where to go that evening. Suddenly, a call from my “boss” in a club in university made me leap from the comfort of my settee. “Are you on the campus now? No? Can you make it to come back before 4 p.m? We must have an urgent meeting to discuss the activity that we are going to host the day after tomorrow. We’ll wait for you.” Good! My vacation plan with my parents was spoiled! Thanks so much to such a “convenient” communication tool! At that time, I wished I had never had a mobile phone! It’s such a disturbance on my life!

Indeed, modern communication technology makes it more convenient for people to contact each other. But there must be some occasions that people are unwilling to be reached. They hope to enjoy a moment of peace in life. And don’t want anyone to disturb such a precious moment in such a hustle and bustle society. In this regard, the modern communication technology development is negative. People are visible and reachable wherever they are.

In turn, for those who want to reach somebody by phone or internet but fail, they are also badly frustrated.

The reason why we are using phones and internet more frequently is its rapid speed. We can reach a person in an instant. But what if we can’t? Then we will be frustrated. Many times when we are trying to reach others, the phone or the computer fails to work or the person we hope to contact does not reply as soon as we expect. In the former case, one may feel so frustrated that he will keep cursing the phone. In the latter case, it’s such a painful time to wait. Sometimes when one is waiting anxiously, one may think wildly: why does it take so long for him/her to reply me? Is s/he in trouble? Does my wording make him/her angry? Is s/he annoyed by me? ... So we can summarize in one word: frustration. That is, our life is disturbed by modern communication technologies such as mobile phones and the internet.

Modern communication technology gives our society a large step forward. Yet, negative development brought by the technology cannot be ignored. The purpose of communication technology is to facilitate communication, but is it really strengthening our communication? That’s a question that we need to consider.
